Following Matt Taylor's mid-season move to Championship side Rotherham, Exeter City are in the hunt for a new manager to keep them away from the League One relegation zone.

Having had just three managers in 17 years, a vacancy in the hot-seat is not something that City fans are entirely used too.

Unlike when Paul Tisdale left, there is no seemingly ready-made replacement internally, so here are five managers who could make St James Park their home...

DAVID ARTELL

The bookies favourite, David Artell joining Exeter City does make the most sense out of all potential candidates.

Formerly of Crewe Alexandra, the Gibraltarian will have a strong idea of the ethos of Exeter City as both clubs share similar attributes, especially in regards to their young players.

Artell was let go by Crewe as they sat bottom of League One last season, and he would have undoubtedly learnt lessons from that period and will be ready to get back into work after six months out.

His main downfall was that he tried to do too much at Crewe, but with a solid recruitment team in place, Artell can focus more on the coaching side of things and not overwork himself.

Currently unemployed, and more than likely in Exeter's budget, a chance for Artell to bounce back straight into League One could be too good to turn down.

LUKE GARRARD

Luke Garrard is one of the brightest prospects in English management, and has been a driving force behind Boreham Wood's rise to becoming top-half mainstays in the National League.

Garrard became Boreham Wood's manager in 2015, and has also been in charge for their best FA Cup run in their history, where last season, they beat Bournemouth 1-0 in the fourth round before losing out to Everton.

A manager who likes to play attractive football, a move up to League One may be a bit of a leap from the National League, but the Englishman has earnt his stripes, and will be ready for a step up in competition.

Garrard is still the manager of Boreham Wood, meaning Exeter would have to agree compensation, and considering how important he is too the National League side, the Grecians could be priced out of a deal.

However, if the club were able to succeed in negotiations, they would be getting an interesting manager with a lot of upside, even if unproven at League One level.

LIAM ROSENIOR

Arriving at Derby County as Wayne Rooney's assistant, Liam Rosenior ended up laying the foundations for the Rams rebuild going into this year's League One campaign.

Following Rooney's departure, the former Brighton man stepped up into an interim managerial role where he oversaw plenty of new arrivals and built a Derby team that will be looking to return to the Championship at the first time of asking.

There were postives and negatives during Rosenior's short time in charge of the Rams, as they struggled to get going away from home, but enjoyed great home form, where the manager's desire to play out from the back was apparent.

Derby employed a very possession heavy style under Rosenior, but the young manager would have to display more versatility if he was given the Exeter City job.

Despite a lack of experience, the Englishman would be desperate to prove himself as a capable manager, and it would also complete the full circle in the most recent managerial merry-go-round.

DAN GREEN

You almost think that if Dan Green had stuck around for a month or two longer, he would be the automatic favourite to take over at Exeter City.

The former lead PDP and first team coach had worked his way up into the first team coaching set-up during his 12 years at the club, playing a big role in the development of some of the club's biggest academy graduates.

Having left the Grecians to take a under-23s coaching role at Aston Villa, it would probably be too soon for Green to return to his home side, and it is unknown whether Green has managerial ambitions.

However, he would represent an option who knows the club inside out, and despite having no managerial experience, he would have worked with all of the current Exeter City squad.

It is unlikely that Green will be the man to replace Taylor, but the next time the role is available, don't be surprised if he is one of the biggest favourites to take over.

MIKE WILLIAMSON

Perhaps the most left-field option on the list, Mike Williamson has made a flying start to his managerial career at Gateshead.

Having taken the job amidst a crisis at the northern side, the former Newcastle defender has proven to be a smart appointment, as he guided the club back to the National League last season, and have had an OK start to life in England's fifth tier, made no easier by losing their best striker Macaulay Langstaff, who has been dubbed the 'non-league Haaland'.

A manager who likes his side to play attractive football, he does lack experience as a manager at League One level, but has plenty of experience from his playing career to look upon.

Similar to Green, Williamson is still early in his coaching journey, and a step-up to the third tier may be a little too early for him, but it would be no surprise to see the Gateshead manager head to the EFL in the next few seasons.
