SUNDAY PL ROUND-UP: BIG WINS FOR LIVERPOOL & EVERTON AND ANOTHER DEFEAT FOR SHEFFIED UNITED

Champions Liverpool beat Leicester 3-0 to move up to second in the Premier League table and extend their incredible unbeaten league run at Anfield.

Sunday also saw an entertaining victory for Everton away at Fulham, a draw between Leeds and Arsenal, and a 1-0 win for West Ham at Bramall Lane.

Liverpool 3-0 Leicester City

Liverpool put off-pitch issues with injuries and positive covid-19 tests to one side as they saw off in-form Leicester to leapfrog The Foxes in the standings.

Brendan Rodgers’ side had won their last six games in all competitions, but never really troubled a Liverpool team that looked ready to retain their title.

A sixth Premier League own goal from Jonny Evans gave the hosts the lead, and they doubled their advantage before half-time courtesy of summer signing Diogo Jota.

Roberto Firmino got on the scoresheet late on to seal a comfortable victory for Jürgen Klopp’s men, who have now beaten their all-time unbeaten league record at home.

Both teams are in European action in midweek, with Liverpool hosting Atalanta and Leicester travelling to Braga in two tasty fixtures.

Fulham 2-3 Everton

Fulham’s defensive frailties were evident once again during a defeat to Everton that saw Dominic Calvert-Lewin become the outright top scorer in the Premier League this season.

The Toffees hadn’t won in the league for four games, so were desperate for three points ahead of their visit to Craven Cottage.

They got off to the ideal start when Calvert-Lewin poked home inside a minute, but Bobby Decordova-Reid equalised soon after.

Two goals in quick succession gave Carlo Ancelotti some breathing space as Calvert-Lewin and then Abdoulaye Doucouré were given far too much room to make it 3-1.

Ivan Cavaleiro became the latest Fulham player to miss a penalty on 68 minutes, and although Ruben Loftus-Cheek did get one back soon after, Everton held on for a valuable victory.

Leeds United 0-0 Arsenal

The decision to leave Mesut Özil out of Arsenal’s Premier League squad continues to look more and more costly as they lacked creativity again in a draw at Elland Road.

Nicolas Pépé’s red card for a headbutt didn’t help the visitors’ cause, but even when it was 11 v 11, Leeds were comfortably the better side and probably should’ve won.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side had 13 shots in the first-half alone, before really stepping it up in the closing stages when they hit the woodwork three times.

Although they got away with a point in the end, it’s another concerning performance for Arsenal ahead of a trip to Norway to face Molde in the Europa League.

Sheffield United 0-1 West Ham

Sheffield United’s woeful start to the season didn’t get any better as a goal from Sébastien Haller was enough to give West Ham all three points.

The Hammers definitely deserved the win in Yorkshire, and a rare goal from outside the box from Haller moves them into the top half of the table.

David Moyes has West Ham playing some really good stuff, and that was in evidence once again as they could’ve beaten The Blades by a much bigger margin.

It’s safe to say there’s a different mood at Sheffield United as they’re still only on one point so far.
