SUNDAY PREM ROUND-UP: SOUTHAMPTON SCORE FOUR AT VILLA PARK, ARSENAL NARROWLY BEAT MAN UTD

James Ward-Prowse scored a brace of free-kicks for Southampton as they continued their rise up the table with a victory against Aston Villa.

On the latest bumper Sunday of Premier League action, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s penalty sealed three points for Arsenal at Old Trafford, while Tottenham and Newcastle picked up valuable wins.

Aston Villa 3-4 Southampton

It was another high-scoring game in the West Midlands, but Dean Smith’s Villa side were on the wrong end of the result on Sunday, suffering their third straight defeat since that memorable win over Liverpool.

Visitors Southampton had a third-minute opener chalked off for the narrowest of offside decisions, but Jannik Vestergaard’s second goal of the campaign gave them the lead soon afterwards.

They led 3-0 at the break with Ward-Prowse further enhancing his reputation as one of the finest free-kick takers in English football, two delicious strikes putting the Saints in dreamland.

Danny Ings made it four with a stunning finish, and a Tyrone Mings goal four minutes later looked to be nothing less than a consolation, up until the final few minutes.

Villa scored twice in added time through an Ollie Watkins penalty and Jack Grealish, but they could not undo the damage and Southampton came away with all three points to move up to 4th.

Manchester United 0-1 Arsenal

Arsenal won at Old Trafford for the first time since 2006 courtesy of Aubameyang’s second Premier League goal of the campaign.

It was not the performance Ole Gunnar Solskjær would’ve been looking for after the Red Devils’ emphatic Champions League victory in midweek, but Arsenal nullified the threats very well.

Mohamed Elneny and Brazilian defender Gabriel were particularly impressive as the Gunners broke their run of 29 winless games away at ‘big six’ clubs.

United’s midfield came under some criticism after they really struggled creatively, with suggestions that new signing Donny van de Beek should be getting more game time.

Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 Brighton & Hove Albion

José Mourinho’s Tottenham responded well to their Europa League defeat in Belgium as Gareth Bale scored a late winner to see off Brighton.

A penalty from Harry Kane gave Spurs the lead as they looked to go 2nd in the table, but they were pegged back after half-time as Tariq Lamptey got on the scoresheet, after a lengthy VAR check.

Although it was controversial, the goal continues a fantastic 2020 for Lamptey, who has been one of Brighton’s best performers since the Premier League returned in June.

The winner came from Bale, who headed in Sergio Reguilón’s cross to net for the first time since returning to North London and seal a big win for the hosts.

Newcastle United 2-1 Everton

Two goals from Callum Wilson handed Newcastle a 2-1 win over Everton as the Toffees were undone by their reliance on Richarlison and James Rodríguez.

The creative duo was missing because of suspension and injury respectively, and that was the difference between the two teams with Everton struggling to carve out opportunities.

The game was goalless up until the 56th minute, as Callum Wilson converted a penalty which he had won himself.

Wilson’s sixth league goal of the season made it two late on, and despite Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s injury-time strike, the Magpies saw the game out and continued their solid start to the campaign.
