SUNDAY PL ROUND-UP: WINNING RETURNS FOR FANS AT LIVERPOOL & TOTTENHAM

A momentous weekend in the Premier League continued as 2,000 fans witnessed comfortable wins for Tottenham and Liverpool, over Arsenal and Wolves respectively.

Spurs’ three points in the North London Derby saw them end the day top of the league, while champions Liverpool were clearly helped by the fans’ presence as they eased past Wolves 4-0.

Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 Arsenal

Arsenal’s desperately poor Premier League form continued as they went down 2-0 to fierce rivals Tottenham, with goals from Son Heung-min and Harry Kane.

Despite five straight victories in the Europa League, the Gunners are now four games without a win domestically and sit 15th in the table.

As for Tottenham, it was another typically efficient performance from José Mourinho’s side and are still unbeaten in the Premier League since the first game of the season.

Son and Kane have been firing on all cylinders since then, and today combined for their eleventh league goal of 2020-21. It looks like that pair are going to break all kinds of records, and the team could do similar too.

Liverpool 4-0 Wolverhampton Wanderers

Liverpool fans got to see their team in the flesh for the first time since winning the Premier League, and they were sent home happy after a convincing win over Wolves.

It could have been very different as the visitors were denied a penalty on the stroke of half-time. Craig Pawson overturned his decision after viewing the pitchside monitor.

That meant the Reds went into the break with a narrow advantage courtesy of Mo Salah’s goal, and Georginio Wijnaldum made it two soon after the interval.

A rare goal from Joel Matip and Nélson Semedo putting through his own net meant it ended 4-0 as Liverpool’s defence, once again including youngsters Caoimhín Kelleher and Neco Williams, kept another clean sheet.

West Bromwich Albion 1-5 Crystal Palace

Palace registered their biggest ever Premier League away win as braces from Wilfried Zaha and Christian Benteke saw them run riot at The Hawthorns.

However, the game was severely affected by a first-half red card for Matheus Pereira, a decision which was on the harsh side.

That came with the score at 1-1 and with West Brom looking to take the lead after Conor Gallagher had cancelled out Darnell Furlong’s own goal.

Three goals in thirteen minutes handed Roy Hodgson’s men the win, two of those from the returning Zaha, before Benteke bagged a fifth late on.

Sheffield United 1-2 Leicester City

The Blades suffered another agonising defeat as Jamie Vardy’s late winner stole all three points for Leicester.

Of Sheffield United’s ten Premier League losses this season, eight have been by a single goal, evidence of the fine margins of football.

A bit of luck going their way could have seen their single point transformed into many more.

Despite Oli McBurnie’s first goal of the season, Vardy added to Ayoze Pérez’s earlier opener to end the Foxes’ two-game losing streak in the league.
