SUNDAY PREMIER LEAGUE ROUND-UP: MAN CITY BRUSH ASIDE LIVERPOOL, TOTTENHAM RETURN TO WINNING WAYS

Manchester City tightened their grip on regaining the Premier League title after a relatively comfortable victory against Liverpool on Sunday.

Tottenham were helped to three points against West Brom by the returning Harry Kane, while Chelsea continued their good form under Thomas Tuchel.

Liverpool 1-4 Manchester City

After going 68 Premier League games unbeaten at home, Liverpool have now been beaten in three consecutive Anfield outings, losing further ground on in-form Manchester City with a 4-1 defeat.

The reigning champions now sit 10 points behind Pep Guardiola’s side having played a game more, and see their title hopes rapidly fading.

The big talking point of the first half was İlkay Gündoğan’s penalty, which he fired over the bar.

However, he didn’t let that affect him and returned to his scoring ways of recent times, netting twice in the second half, two strikes which were sandwiched by a Mo Salah penalty.

Goals from Raheem Sterling and Phil Foden sealed the three points for the visitors late on as they extended their Premier League unbeaten run to 14 and their winning run in all competitions to the same total.

Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 West Bromwich Albion

Harry Kane was somewhat surprisingly re-introduced to the starting eleven for the game against West Brom, and he made the difference to ensure a much-needed win for Tottenham.

He slotted home from Pierre-Emile Højbjerg’s delightful pass, before the Englishman’s partner in crime, Son Heung-min doubled the lead soon after.

Spurs had lost their last three, all in the league, with manager José Mourinho coming under criticism for his style of play.

That was the case again in the first half against the Baggies, but the two goals did the job to leave West Brom looking like arguably the most likely team to be relegated at the moment.

Sheffield United 1-2 Chelsea

A Jorginho penalty won the game for Chelsea for the second game running as they edged past Sheffield United at Bramall Lane.

It had been a solid if unspectacular start to life in west London for Thomas Tuchel, and that theme continued at the Blades.

Mason Mount ended a dull start to the match by opening the scoring just before the break, but Antonio Rüdiger’s calamitous own goal levelled things.

After a strange VAR incident that eventually gave a clear spot-kick to the visitors, which Jorginho slotted in, Chelsea held on for a victory that puts them up to 5th.

Wolverhampton Wanderers 0-0 Leicester City

Wolves and Leicester played out a goalless draw at Molineux which doesn’t do either team too many favours.

Brendan Rodgers’ Foxes had only lost one of their last 12 in all competitions and are looking good for a top-four finish, but failed to break down a stubborn Wolves outfit.

The hosts still haven’t really recovered from the worrying injury to talisman Raúl Jiménez, and look set for a disappointing lower-mid table finish.

It was another attacking performance that suggests Wolves are quite lucky that the bottom three are well adrift, otherwise they might’ve been in a bit of trouble.
