FOXES FIGHT FOR FIRST: DO LEICESTER HAVE WHAT IT TAKES TO WIN THE LEAGUE AGAIN?

At the start of the season, who would have predicted that Leicester City would have been top of the league by the midway point.

With Chelsea spending over £200 million, Manchester City bringing in the players they needed to fix their defensive problems, and Liverpool being a well-oiled machine under Jurgen Klopp, nobody was talking about the Foxes back in September.

Yet here we are, with the club flying high, currently sitting in third place, two points off top, a place they temporarily sat after a comfortable 2-0 victory over Frank Lampard’s men on Tuesday night, before Man City’s win against Aston Villa.

Credit for the Foxes form should go to manager Brendon Rodgers, who has achieved all this despite his squad being hit with injuries to key players like Caglar Soyuncu and James Maddison, and the club having by far the lowest net spend in the top six.

Jamie Vardy has also been consistent as ever, grabbing 11 goals and 5 assists so far in the league this season. At 34, the Englishman is showing no signs of slowing down.

Even though the team is still heavily reliant on their talisman, when he hasn’t been able to find the net the teams midfielders have stepped up.

Harvey Barnes has scored 6 league goals this season, whilst Maddison now has 3 goals from his last three games. Both players are making a good case to be included in Gareth Southgate’s next England squad.

Credit should also be given to the Foxes defence, with James Justin looking like an improvement on Ben Chilwell, and Wesley Fofana emerging as one of the best defensive talents in Europe.

What also stands out about City is their team spirit and work rate, with James Maddison saying in his post-match interview with Sky Sports that: “You don’t play for Brendon Rodgers if you don’t do the dirty work”.

Will the foxes be able to keep up this form all season? Their next game against Everton on the 27th should be a good indicator, with the Toffees the last side to defeat them.

After the bitter disappointment of missing out on the top four last year, Foxes fans will be delighted by their current standing.

Don’t be surprised to see them in the title fight right down to the wire.
