The January transfer window is in full throttle, and we have already seen a number of exciting moves from some of the Premier League’s elite.
With the likes of Phillipe Coutinho and Kieran Trippier returning to England’s top division, it is safe to say business is far from over for some of the country’s biggest clubs.
With so much talent set to join the Premier League however, it is inevitable opportunities will be harder to come by for those players struggling to break into their respective sides.
Whether it is youngsters needing regular minutes to advance their progression, out of form talent who could use a change of scenery, or veterans who have struggled to keep up with the Premier League’s unrelenting pace, these are five Premier League players who would benefit from a move to the championship this month.
Joe Rodon - Loan
Following his move from Swansea in October 2020, hopes were high for Joe Rodon’s future at Tottenham Hotspur, but so far, the Welshman’s tenure in London has been nothing short of a disaster.
The 24-year-old has struggled to adapt to life in the Premier League and has featured just once in the league for Spurs this season, a game in which they lost 3-0 to Crystal Palace. The arrival of Antonio Conte has not helped matters either, with Rodon playing just 54 minutes since the Italian took charge of the London club.
With first-team opportunities looking sparce, the defender could benefit from a temporary spell away from Tottenham, perhaps bolstering the defence of a promotion chasing championship side.
Phil Jones - Loan
Similarly to Rodon, Phil Jones likely knows first-team opportunities will be few and far between for him at Manchester United. With his appearance against Wolves last week his first in the league in almost two years, the Englishman needs regular playing time if he wants to recapture some of the form that had many touting him a future England star in his youth.
With his monumental wages, a loan spell would likely be the only option for the 29-year-old this year, but a return to Blackburn Rovers, the club where it all began, makes a lot of sense and could benefit both parties as Rovers look to return to the Premier League for the first time in a decade.
Crysencio Summerville - Loan
Expectations are high for Crysencio Summerville at Leeds United and many are hoping the future is bright for the youngster at Elland Road.
Following his move from Feyenoord, the 19-year-old has made five Premier League appearances for Marcelo Bielsa’s side and regular minutes is imperative to his development if he is to fulfil the lofty expectations many have of him.
It is clear the winger’s future is at Leeds, but a loan spell in the championship, where he will get plenty of minutes to help his progress would be a wise move for the Dutchman right now.
Amad Diallo - Loan
Manchester United fans were thrilled when the club beat a number top teams around Europe to sign Amad Diallo from Atalanta last year.
The youngster has bags of potential and more than likely has a bright future ahead of him at Old Trafford, but with just one first-team appearance this season, it does not seem Diallo will feature prominently for the Red Devils’ anytime soon.
With that being said, a spell in the championship would prove hugely beneficial to the 19-year-old and makes a tonne of sense for United as well. The Ivory Coast native would thrive playing regularly and would only improve throughout.
Fraser Forster - Loan
After a successful loan spell at Celtic back in the 2019-20 campaign, Fraser Forster decided against rejoining the Scottish side and instead fight for his place at Southampton… and that has not worked out for the goalkeeper.
With just 10 league appearances in the two seasons since, the Englishman should probably accept that his future lies away from St Mary’s, but if he still wants to force himself into Ralph Hasenhüttl’s first-team plans, and a loan move to the championship would be the best next step for Forster as he seeks regular minutes and proves himself worthy.
