Christmas is a time of cold weather, and these footballers were certainly ice cold on the pitch.

Here are four of the coolest customers to play the beautiful game.

Andrea Pirlo

There are not many footballer’s calmer and cooler than Andrea Pirlo. The Italian spent ten years at AC Milan, where he won two Champions Leagues and two Serie A titles before moving on a free transfer to Juventus, where he established himself as an all time great. With his long hair and incredible beard, Pirlo was just as cool off the pitch as he was on it, and he was certainly one of the most composed players in football. This was probably summed up best by his panenka penalty against Joe Hart during the penalty shoot-out, as Italy went through to the semi-finals. Pirlo’s ability to pick out any player on the football pitch made him one of the best in the world during his career.

Xabi Alonso

When you ask most modern-day Liverpool fans their favourite player, there are usually two answers, Steven Gerrard or Xabi Alonso. The Spaniard was one of the best passers of the ball to ever grace the Premier League, and that puts him on this list. Alonso has scored from his own half twice, which shows that he had that ice cold composure, when others were switching off and unaware. He moved on from Liverpool in 2009, arriving at Real Madrid, where Alonso lifted a league title and a Champions League trophy before heading to Germany. The German club was obviously Bayern, and Alonso remained the most composed player on the pitch on the way to three Bundesliga titles.

George Best

When you talk about someone being cool on and off the pitch, you cannot look past George Best. The original celebrity footballer, best gained a reputation for his party-loving lifestyle but that did not stop him tearing apart defences’ week in, week out. Best scored 137 goals on the pitch, and scored a lot off the pitch, but we will focus on his footballing exploits for now. The greatest player to ever come out of Northern Ireland had a lot of pace, natural ability and he was also two footed, which made him a nightmare for any full back Best would come up against. He spent 11 years at Manchester United, and is still one of the best players to have ever worn the Red Devils shirt.

David Ginola

David Ginola was definitely one of the coolest players ever. The Frenchmen arrived in the Premier League in 1995 where in only 58 games he made himself a Newcastle United legend, through his incredible first touch and his ability to get past anyone. He was signed by Kevin Keegan as Newcastle looked to become one of the top forces in English football but Ginola could only inspire two second place finishes, but there is no doubt that he made a real impact at St James Park. A inductee to the Tottenham hall of fame, Ginola will always be remembered as one of the most flamboyant and composed players in Premier League history.
