Even when the injuries didn’t let him be the striker we are used to seeing, Agüero’s departure is a big loss for the team and, especially for the fans.
Since the announcement, thousands of rumours started, about the Argentinian’s future but also about who will be his replacement.
The first question should be: Will Guardiola look for a replacement?
These last couple of months the coach decided not to use, in the important matches, a striker with the characteristics of Gabriel Jesus or Agüero, instead, he used players like De Bruyne or Bernardo Silva, in the same positions but with a different style.
So, is it completely necessary to look for another striker? The evidence says that Manchester City can win and perform excellent with no typical forward and could conform with one striker like Gabriel Jesus.
Apart from that the window to sign a new striker is still open, let see the 4 players who have chances to arrive at The Citizens:
Erling Braut-Haaland:
This is the obvious name, all the big teams have the Norwegian on their shortlist. He has been more related with Real Madrid but Pep Guardiola wants to sign Haaland, even when it’s almost impossible. There are two complications. The CEO of Borussia Dortmund is convinced that he will stay in Germany at least for another year. The other issue is that the competition is extremely difficult, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Manchester United are behind the striker and we all know they are the most powerful teams in the world economically, so it will depend on who is ready to shell out more.
Harry Kane:
One of the greatest British strikers in the last couple of years, he is the captain and idol of Tottenham but he is almost 28 years old and has still not won any silverware in his career, this is a situation that he has constantly in his mind and he talked to the press about it after winning an individual trophy: "It is bittersweet. I would rather be winning team trophies and this one but it is what it is”. So, the idea of maybe leaving Spurs for a more competitive team is on the table, plus Manchester would be investing in a player with excellent Premier League experience.
Andre Silva:
The Portuguese player of Eintracht Frankfurt is also on Guardiola's list to replace the Argentinian. It may be the most suppressive name of all, but it is still justified. He played in teams like Milan, Sevilla and Porto with no great success but in Frankfurt he found a great team to enhance his skills. 44 goals in 70 matches in his whole career in Germany and 28 this season until now, he is in the eye of many clubs for this summer but, in this case for Manchester, seems like the most accessible option.
Lautaro Martinez:
In Argentina, since he started at Racing Club, his home nation think that he is the most similar player to Sergio Agüero. He is not too tall but with a great header and amazing power in dribbling and shooting, he would be an excellent player for the Premier League. He was always linked with Barcelona as a replacement for Suarez and in the last few weeks he has also been linked with Atletico Madrid. He said he is really happy in Inter, he had a great season crowned with the Serie A trophy, but if Guardiola truly wants him, Manchester City could put an offer in that makes him think twice.
