Last Sunday's defeat against Leicester City, left Manchester United with one less option to win a trophy this year.
This Premier League season is the best in the last couple years, they are in 2nd place with important wins like the derby against Manchester City (2-0) and amazing matches like against Southampton (9-0) and Leeds (6-2), but they are still far from the leaders of the league, Manchester City.
The 14 points difference between The Citizens and The Reds is hard to shorten and can be explained in matches that United should have won and finally lost, like against Sheffield United (2-1), Crystal Palace (3-2), Aston Villa (1-0) and the embarrassing loss against Tottenham (6-1).
Winning the Premier League seems really difficult right now but that’s not the biggest lost in the Manchester United season. The big problem was the poor performance in the UEFA Champions League, their group wasn’t easy PSG, RB Leipzig and Istanbul BB, but after a great start against PSG (2-1) and Leipzig (5-0) the unbelievable defeat against a minor rival like Istanbul BB (2-1) really hit the team’s confidence and after one more win and two loses in the last games they fell in the 3rd position with a place in the Europa League.
With the bad results in the national cups and the 2nd place in the league, the Europa League is a great opportunity to give the fans a trophy, even when it wasn’t the first goal when the season started.
The Reds had a great start defeating Real Sociedad and Milan and now they have to face an accessible round against Granada in the quarter-final in order to keep dreaming in this competition.
Right now, the quarter-final includes tough teams like Arsenal, Roma and Ajax, so we could expect a hard semi-final in case of a victory in this round.
With the ambitious goals that a club like Manchester United always has at the beginning of a season, this Europa League could sound like consolation prize but, with the irregular performance the team had in important matches, a trophy could be a great confidence boost for next season.
