WHO'S NEXT: FIVE POSSIBLE PULIS REPLACEMENTS FOR SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY

After the sacking of Tony Pulis, Sheffield Wednesday will be looking for a new manager to steer them clear of a dreaded relegation to League One. Here are five managers who could possibly end up in the Hillsborough dugout.

Paul Cook

It feels like Paul Cook has been linked with every Championship job that has come up this season, but there are good reasons behind it. Cook hasn’t really failed in his last few jobs and his stock has certainly risen since he arrived at Chesterfield. After guiding Portsmouth to the League Two title, he was head hunted by Wigan, and there he took them back into the Championship and if it wasn’t for the club’s misfortunes off the pitch, they would have remained there last season. Since departing Wigan, Cook has been linked with various jobs and if the rumours of Wednesday contacting him are true, it looks like he will be back into work very soon.

Joey Barton

The same day he was let go by Fleetwood Town, Joey Barton found himself linked with the Sheffield Wednesday job. Despite a less than ideal season so far, the former Newcastle man has done well in his limited time in management, making Fleetwood a good top half League One side. There are obviously doubts about his experience, which is valid, but Barton has proven himself as a decent manager and he may be the man to take Wednesday out of the drop zone and keep them up. He certainly has the character to get out of a survival situation but whether he has the tactical acumen to do so in the Championship, we are yet to find out.

Danny Cowley

Similar to Paul Cook, Danny Cowley has been seemingly linked with every job in the EFL since his departure from Huddersfield. His time at the Terriers would probably be the biggest stumbling block when it comes to getting the job at Wednesday. Although he was not really given the time to build at Huddersfield, having been sacked once before in the Championship may not look too encouraging to the Hillsborough faithful. However, we all know that the Danny Cowley is a talented manager, as is his brother and would-be assistant Nicky Cowley, therefore it would not be too surprising to see them in a job some time soon, Sheffield Wednesday or not.

Gus Poyet

Gus Poyet has made it clear in recent weeks that we would like to return to management, and after falling short of the Sunderland job, it would be no surprise to see the former Chelsea man put himself forward for the job at Sheffield Wednesday. After doing a good job at Brighton, getting them into the Championship, Poyet found himself tasked with keeping Sunderland in the Premier League, which was something he succeeded at before being sacked midway through his second season with the club in 17th. Poyet has not really got going since, with short spells at AEK Athens, Real Betis, Shanghai Shenua and Bordeaux not going to plan. While the Uruguayan has proven he can keep sides up, his lack of recent success and employment may mean that Wednesday opt for someone else.

Paco Jemez

While Paco Jemez is a complete wildcard, Sheffield Wednesday have taken risks on managers with minimal experience in England before and they may be willing to try again to avoid relegation. Best known for his spell at Rayo Vallecano, where he led the side to their highest ever top-flight finish, just outside the Europa League positions in eighth. A terrible move to Granada followed, where he only managed six games and won none before being dismissed, but he recovered well at Cruz Azul. His last two management roles may be slightly concerning however, with Jemez only getting two wins out of 23 and an ok spell back at Vallecano followed where he was dismissed after no wins in seven games. Jemez has shown he can build a team and make an impact, but his proneness to poor form may rule him out of getting the Wednesday job.
